I’m interested that Archbishop Justin turns out to be the illegitimate son of two alcoholics. It shows that God doesn’t care what our background is. He’s in the business of transformation and renewal, and one of the ways he does that is to take our past and change the present and the future. There’s no doubt in my mind that the emotional struggles that Justin experienced when he was growing up, and the other traumatic experiences he’s been through, feed now into his vision and ministry.

It is a lovely story in its own way. I was quite taken with a comment received by the media from one of the C Of E hierarchy about this revelation. “Justin Welby has been very mature about it all”.
For me, no child is illegitimate, whether it be a legal status or not. It, in my opinion requires correction. It is the circumstances and actions of both parents in producing progeny, which is/was illegitimate. Whatever other judgements may, or may not be made about them are supplementary.
Justin can follow along with the large band of other children and adults who have had similar experiences, who, because they are not in the public eye, who, because they do not have a well known connection, we never hear anything about.
It seems apt to quote:
‘Suffer the little children to come unto me….”

I guess he’s had about 3 weeks to ‘process’ before going public … he seems to be getting a very supportive response in Lusaka at present. What a thing!

Welby’s regret at not being the first Jewish Archbishop of Canterbury was bemusing. Montefiori would have been another candidate. Ah well, you can’t have everything!

Ha ha! I take what you say in your earlier comment, as being very similar to what I think myself, that there are no illegitimate children, only bastard parents. However, even in our modern liberal age, and especially in other countries, this is still a huge stigma and a painful secret. Justin’s story could be liberating for such people.
