Recently a competition was held as part of York’s Festival of Ideas, asking children and young teenagers to come up with a new set of Ten Commandments for the 21st century. Here’s a sample:
Don’t snog the wrong person – and if you do, don’t try to cover it up with a super-injunction
Don’t leave the bathroom light on – the world’s running out of power
Do not idolise people or worship celebrities, be your own person
Don’t build nuclear power stations in places that might have earthquakes or tsunamis
Try to pay a fair price for your items so that everyone gets a fair wage for the work they do
Technology is very useful, but is not to be worshipped.
If only grown-ups were as clear-eyed as these youngsters! Maybe they should run the government … 😉

If only the media would follow up more positive stories like this, I think we would be surprised to find how many youngsters view the world with intelligent and sensible ideas.

Obviously deep young thinkers here in Yorkshire – perhaps others might learn from them to adopt the “Do not idolise people or worship celebrities” policy?

Intelligent and sensible, Silver! If only the media would highlight some of the positive stuff youngsters are doing, instead of feeding us all the miserable negative stuff all the time. It gives us a skewed view of them.

It’s interesting to look at some of the others, too. It shows how some young people care about the environment and about the needs of other people, and see the dangers inherent in a technological age.
